Pat, a Vietnam veterinarian finished with marriage and booze, gets his dosage of society relaxing alone and dry at the neighborhood bar. One evening, seeing a pre-season Red Sox game, he ends up next to several loudmouth writers gathered around a guy in a wheelchair. The freelance writers get under Pat's skin, and he says something lousy to the big-shot who, it turns out, is also a big-shot copy writer. The person laughs and tells Pat to appear to the house where he and his group discuss writing. Pat goes for the hell from it and for the chance of a fresh good friend, not suspecting this new good friend has a soldier's heartbreaking agenda.
