A poetry workshop to remember Black Background Month at Kingston University led to the forming of Kindred Spirits, a poetry group made up of students from multiple faculties, all with one thing in common: the need to express themselves through the written phrase. Streams of Awareness is the first anthology released by this accomplished group. While each author writes about subject matter that fire their personal passions, universal themes tell you their work; loneliness, love, delight, and the value of family sparkle through each web page, providing common earth despite the authors' diverse backgrounds. Some choose to take on larger social issues, while some explore the complexities of familial interactions and the objectives of parents. All are powerful works. All are sincere. Edgy and impressive, Streams of Awareness won't mince words, with each writer believing authenticity is paramount to true expression. Many of the poems found within are collaborations with award-winning poets Deanna Rodgers (UK Poetry Slam Champion) and Sabrina Mahfouz (The Clean Collection). The moving power behind the poems, however, is the students themselves, whose voices do what poetry does indeed best - mirror back life in all its inspiring, messy, contradictory glory.
