Stillwater University in Virginia, 1966. Freshman Peggy, an ingénue with literary pretensions, falls under the spell of Lee, a blue-blooded poet and teacher, and they begin an ill-advised affair that results within an unplanned pregnancy and marriage. The few are mismatched from the start - she's a lesbian, he's homosexual - but it requires a decade of mental erosion before Peggy operates off with their three-year-old daughter, leaving their nine-year-old kid behind. Worried that Lee will have her devoted on her behalf erratic tendencies, Peggy will go underground, implementing an African-American persona on her behalf and her girl. They squat in a residence within an African-American settlement deal, eventually moving to a housing project where no-one questions their true racial identities. As Peggy and Lee's children expand up, they need to contend with diverse mental issues: Byrdie must offer with his father's compulsive honesty while Karen struggles with her mother's is situated - she is aware neither her real era nor that she is white nor that she's any other family. Years later a minority scholarship or grant lands Karen at the University or college of Virginia, where Byrdie is at his senior season. Eventually the long-lost sibling is going, setting off a series of misunderstandings and culminating in a comedic finale worthy of Shakespeare.
