On May 7, 1915, the Lusitania neared the seacoast of Ireland. At 2:10 in the afternoon, a torpedo terminated by the German submarine U 20 slammed into her side. A strange second explosion ripped the liner apart. Chaos reigned. The dispatch listed so terribly and quickly that lifeboats crashed into passengers packed on deck or dumped their tons into the water. Most passengers never really had the opportunity.
