John Harris Rogers (1863?1930) served in Texas law enforcement for more than four years, as a Tx Ranger, Deputy and U.S. Marshal, city police key, and in the private sector as a security agent. He's recognized in history as one of the legendary "Four Captains" of the Ranger make that helped make the change from the Frontier Battalion days in to the 20th century, yet no person has fully explored and written about his life. Paul N. Spellman now presents the first full-length biography of this enigmatic man. During his years as a Ranger, Rogers witnessed and participated in the civilizing of Western Tx. As the railroads changed out in the 1880s, cities grew up prematurely, lawlessness was the guideline, and the Rangers were soon called directly into build order. Rogers was practically always there. Likewise he participated in some of the most dramatic and significant happenings during the closing years of the Frontier Battalion: the Brown County fence reducing wars; the East Tx Conner Battle; the El Paso/Langtry Prizefight; the riots through the Laredo Quarantine; and the hunts for Hill Loftis and Gregorio Cortez. Rogers was the lawman who captured Cortez to summarize one of the most infamous chases in Tx background. Rogers was wont to utilize the Bible normally as his six-gun, both with dramatic effect. That and his constant devotion to his family place him apart from the usual lawmen of this period. He was a guy of regulations and a guy of God, a uncommon combination at the switch of the century. The booklet is published by School of North Tx Press.
