The Kordolians are loose on the asteroid mining place Fortuna Tau, and first-rank mechanic Jia Morgan has gotten caught up in the heavy of things. Beneath the careful watch of these steely-eyed metallic warriors, Jia and her team have been tasked with restoring the hull of the Kordolians' Alpha-Class fight cruiser, Silence. The issue is, their alien technology is far, far beyond anything she's seen before, and whatever they make an effort to weld to Silence's dark hull just won't keep. When Jia goes into search of a tool that may actually permeate the warship's impossibly strong Callidum external surfaces, she detects herself being aided by a most unlikely source. The hard-faced warrior who's decided to accompany her walks on silent foot and posesses big, big firearm. He's identical parts terrifying and attractive, in an otherworldly type of way. But although Jia detects this Kordolian fascinating, she's not even going to try and get close to him, because, well, he's a freaking Kordolian, and Kordolians aren't exactly known throughout the Nine Galaxies to be nice and warm and fuzzy. Instead, she is going to do her job and fix their warship, because that is the only way these intimidating warriors are ever before going to leave Fortuna Tau.
