Here, a conniving man indulges in a ruthless program to acquire his step-daughter's inheritance - until Holmes comes after the scene. The 16 shows of Sherlock Holmes starring Gielgud and Richardson were made by Harry Alan Towers (1920-2009) for his "Towers of London" company. These were first broadcast on the old BBC Light Programme in 1954, and by NBC in 1955; they remain regarded as by many as the definitive Holmes series. History Media acquired exclusive distribution rights to the series from Towers in 1994; the series was licensed for quite some time with great success to Hodder Headline and reverted to Heritage by the end of 2009. The scripts were compiled by John Keir Mix, closely following a original reviews of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, but renaming a few of them. The music for the productions was made up by Sydney Torch, with the famous violin cadenzas played out by Alfredo Campoli. Other stars showing included Robert Rietti, and John Gielgud's sibling Val (later Director of Episode at the BBC), who played out Mycroft Holmes. Orson Welles required the part of Professor Moriarty. Quite possibly other 'big titles' on the BBC roster made an appearance in the series anonymously too. The recordings were carefully remastered in order never to detract from the ambience of the initial performances.
