Life should be good for Avery Shaw. She's received a hunky new sweetheart in local pawnshop owner (and sometime private detective) Elliot Kane, her cousin Lexie swears she'll be moving out of her house 1 day "real soon" and her family has been relatively noiseless for a complete week. That's virtually efficiency in Avery's world. Then, what appears to be a arbitrary freeway shooting leading to the fatality of a mother, triggers upheaval on just about every front. Region Sheriff Jake Farrell announces that the same gun used in the current shooting was also found in a similar shooting one state over a few weeks before. A joint process force is assembled and the denizens of southeastern Michigan are on border - including Elliot and Jake, who still can't quite appear to make amends with each other. Avery is on the case, but she's received a few distractions blocking her way. The commander of the local National Guard bottom is acting cagey, there's a new public relations liaison in the sheriff's team that is setting up the law about media leaks and her grandfather is refusing to report for jury responsibility which, most likely, will bring about his own incarceration. If you couple that with Carly's forthcoming wedding, the opening of Lexie's new yoga studio and Avery's mom's insistence that Thundercats shoes aren't appropriate footwear for public outings, and Avery's delight quotient continues to plummet. Avery is determined to obtain the story - even though it becomes apparent that her efforts have transformed the shooter's attention to her. When Avery finally does find an answer, will she make it through to share with anyone about it?
