"We were across the Saar River in Dellingen, where the Struggle of the Bulge began. That was where Axis Sally informed us about the Bulge. (Dent Wheeler) Following the successful amphibious invasion on D-Day in June 1944, the Allies began race east toward Germany and liberating France along the way. By the end of August 1944, the German Military in France was shattered, with 200,000 killed or wounded and a further 200,000 captured. However, Adolf Hitler reacted to the news of invasion with glee, figuring it could give the Germans an opportunity to demolish the Allied armies that possessed water to their backs. As he input it, "The news headlines couldn't be better. We've them where we can demolish them." Today Americans know it best as the Struggle of the Bulge. Regardless of the term for this, and despite how anxious the Germans were, the Struggle of the Bulge was an enormous attack against mainly American makes that inflicted an estimated 100,000 American casualties, the most severe American losses in virtually any battle of the battle. However, as the German forces does succeed in twisting with some details even breaking through Allied lines (thus causing the "bulge" mirrored in the moniker), the Germans finally failed. As Winston Churchill himself said of the battle, "This is undoubtedly the greatest American battle of the battle, and will, I believe, be thought to be an ever before famous American win."
