Celebrated as one of the first popular puzzle novels, The Girl in White, by Wilkie Collins, skillfully contains the twisting and making of more than a few storyline lines that all have the ability to converge beautifully at the end of the work. Walter Hartright, a skill teacher, crosses pathways one day with a woman who appears to be distressed, and he notices immediately that she is clad within an all-white outfit. It is later made known to him that she is from an asylum, and that her name is Anne. The folks of the city know her very well. After Walter requires a job at what's known as Limmeridge House, he notices that one of his students - Laura - looks strikingly like the distressed girl he met, Anne. But it is not until down the road in the book that he discovers the key reason why. Through some calculated movements that involve loss of life and a huge inheritance, the small community is rocked and shrouded in puzzle as a result of the conniving Sir Percival Glyde, who's interested only in making himself wealthy as a result of others. As in all great books, the antagonists get what they have earned, and the personas who maintain their dignity are compensated handsomely in the end.
