Africa supplies the majority of the world's diamond jewelry, yet consumers generally know little about the roots and history of these precious rocks beyond sensationalized mass media accounts of so-called blood diamonds. Rocks of Contention explores the major innovations in the remarkable background of Africa's diamond jewelry, from the first stirrings of international fascination with the continent's nutrient prosperity in the first millennium A.D. for this day. In the Western european colonial period, the discovery of diamond jewelry in South Africa ushered in an period of unprecedented greed where monopolistic enterprises exploited both the nutrient resources and the indigenous labor force. In the aftermath of World Conflict II, the government authorities of newly self-employed African expresses, both democratic and despotic, joined industry giant De Beers and other organizations to oversee and benefit from mining activity on the continent. The booklet also considers the activities of several Africans - from casual artisanal miners, company mineworkers, and indigenous regulators to armed rebels, mining executives, and premiers of mineral-rich expresses - and their romantic relationships to the rocks that have the energy to bring both prosperity and misery. The booklet is printed by Ohio University Press.
