Wednesday Martin mixes autobiography, anthropology, and satire in Primates of Park Avenue, a close-up look at the rarefied enclave of New York City's Upper East Side, one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the world. As Martin chronicles her tense, and sometimes entertaining, efforts to fit into a world where preschoolers have play schedules on private planes, she discovers the neighborhood's real center when tragedy strikes her family. When Martin and her partner began their family these were concerned about the lingering ramifications of the Sept 11, 2001 disorders on downtown Manhattan. Because of this, they migrated from the trendy, bohemian Western Community to the formal, conservative Upper East Side because of its excellent schools, proximity to Central Park, and the actual fact that her partner had many family members already living there. Martin recognized the social customs would be different, but she was stunned by the ethnic onslaught she experienced even although distance between the two neighborhoods was just a few miles.
