Late October, 1962. Wes Avery, a one-time Air Force tail-gunner, is living his version of the American Dream as caring spouse to Sarah, doting daddy to seventeen-year-old Charlotte, and owner of a successful Texaco train station along central Florida's busiest highway. But after Chief executive Kennedy announces that the Soviets have nuclear missiles in Cuba, Army convoys clog the highways and the sky fills with fighter planes. Within times, Wes's carefully made life commences to unravel. Sarah, anxious and watchful, spends increasingly more time in the family's bomb shelter, sliding away into youth memories and the dreams she once organised for future years. Charlotte is wary but swept up in the excitement of high school - her nomination to homecoming judge, the upcoming boogie, and the buzz of first love. Wes, keeping in mind his wartime experience, attempts to keep his family's times as normal as you possibly can, hoping to restore a feeling of sooth. But as the panic over the Missile Crisis goes up, a long-buried top secret threatens to motivate the Averys over the edge. With heartbreaking clearness and compassion, Susan Carol McCarthy catches the shock and innocence, stress and dread, in those thirteen historic times, and brings vividly to life one normal family trying to hold center while the world around them falls apart.
