"There is absolutely no question in the sanctity of Mecca, but a donkey won't become a Hajj pilgrim by just going through the motions." (Rahman Baba) "Whenever the Prophet...delivered from a quest and noticed the walls of Madinah, he'd make his Support go fast, if he was with an pet (i.e., a horse), he'd make it gallop because of his love for Madinah." (Sahih Bukhari, Publication 30: Hadith 110) The explanation for the existence of most of the world's places is evident to geography students. NY and Shanghai control profound ports and straddle great rivers, providing trade from the inside; Paris and London are in the crossing points of major cross-country rivers; Johannesburg rests atop a great pile of yellow metal ore; and Moscow and Madrid are in the hearts of these great countries, easily able to control even the more distant edges of the land. Mecca is quite different, as the town exists solely since it is holy. Even centuries prior to the delivery of the Prophet Muhammad, the leaders of Mecca proven that their city was the preeminent holy site in American Arabia and proven a truce for pilgrims to the town. In the process one aftereffect of this was that Mecca became a middle for what might today be referred to as tourism, as even old guests needed places for food, water, and sleep. At the same time, they will make offerings in the temples and leave with mementos of their time in Mecca. Many also found it convenient to bring their trade goods to the marketplaces of Mecca, where they may find visitors providing interesting wares from over the region, and the town also appreciated the status of your trade center. Certainly Mecca is now best known to be Islam's holiest city, revered as the birthplace of Muhammad and the site where Allah first discovered the Qu'ran to him.
