Johnny Fristo and Speck Quitman, young, hardworking cowboys from Fort Concho, Tx, have worked six months - at $20 per month - on the Devil's River. Their manager, a hawk-faced cow trader called Larramore, reneges on the amount of money he owes the guys, sneaks out of the cow camp, and heads for San Angelo. Fristo is high and slim, his mind 100 mls away; Quitman is short, bandy legged, and "bedazzled by the adobe flash of credit cards and the slosh of whiskey".
