Fourteen-year-old Bun O'Keefe has lived a solitary life within an unsafe, unsanitary house. Her mother is a compulsive hoarder, and Bun has had little contact with the exterior world. What she's learned all about life comes from the random literature and old VHS tapes that she discovers in the boxes and luggage her mother brings home. Bun and her mother rarely talk, so when Bun's mother tells Bun to leave 1 day, she does. Hitchhiking out of town, Bun eventually ends up on the roadways of St. John's, Newfoundland. Luckily, the first person she complies with is Busker Boy, a street musician who senses her naivety and needs her in. Alongside one another they are in a residence with an eclectic solid of characters: Chef, a hotel dishwasher with culinary dreams; Cher, a drag queen with a tragic former; Big Eyes, a Catholic university girl desperately endeavoring to reinvent herself; along with the Landlord, a guy who Bun is advised to avoid by any means. Through her experience with her new roommates, and their sometimes tragic revelations, Bun discovers that the globe extends beyond the walls of her mother's house and discovers the joy to be part of a new family - a family of friends who caution.
