A lady has been found lifeless in her room in a boarding house. Initially it appears like a clear case of suicide, but both doctors joining the death place a couple of white footprints in coloring on the red linoleum of the floor. As the home happens to be being repainted, and the window-sills were still protected in wet coloring, it is clear that the girl has been murdered by someone who entered and kept through the windowpane. In addition, the footprints have some strange peculiarities. These are bare footprints...and on both legs it would appear that the little feet is missing. When Dr. Thorndyke is called onto the situation these extraordinary footprints lead him immediately to the an eye on the murderer.
