Beautifully located in the medieval heart of Umbria, Assisi is one of the very most popular sightseeing and pilgrimage areas in Italy. Not merely does it have a historical centre of distinguished monuments, choices of skill, and amazing views of the surrounding countryside but it rests on the doorstep of the Parco Regionale Monte Subasio (Mt. Subasio Regional Area). It is also tied with the legacy of its best-known son, St. Francis. As the ancient Umbrian city of Asisum left a priceless legacy of Etruscan and Roman buildings, it was the town's most well-known monk who changed Assisi into a niche site of huge architectural and creative importance. Lots of the greats of the high Middle Ages and the Renaissance were attracted to Assisi from all over Italy, and spectacular works of Umbrian painting and sculpture adorn every cathedral, cathedral, and palace. Basilica di San Francesco e Sacro Convento is the city's undisputed jewel, located western world of the historical centre. Built soon after the loss of life of St. Francis in 1228, it includes two churches - one built above the other - and a crypt dug in 1818 to house the saint's tomb. Moved into via a courtyard built by Pope Sixtus IV with spectacular views of the surrounding countryside, the dark lower cathedral has striking later Romanesque vaulting and frescoes by a few of the best painters of the 13th and 14th ages, including Cimabue, the Lorenzetti brothers, and Simone Martini; top of the cathedral is Italy's earliest Gothic church and it is adorned with Giotto's famous pattern of 28 frescoes telling the reviews and legends of the life span of St. Francis.
