An unforgettable storyline of children in wartime, of heroism at sea, and - above all - of courage and the energy of the human being spirit. On September 17, 1940, at just a little after 10 during the night, a German submarine torpedoed the passenger liner SS City of Benares in the North Atlantic. There have been 406 people onboard, however the ship's prized travellers were 90 children whose parents had elected to send their boys and girls away from THE UK to flee the ravages of World Conflict II. These were considered lucky, headed for calm, peaceful, and relatively bountiful Canada. The Benares sank in half one hour, in a gale that dispatched several of her lifeboats pitching in to the frigid sea. These were more than 500 mls from land, 300 mls from the nearest save vessel. Miracles on the Drinking water says the astonishing storyline of the survivors - not just one of whom had any reasonable anticipation of save as the ship went down. The original "miracle" requires one British destroyer's race to the field, against time and from the elements; the second is the storyplot of Lifeboat 12, skipped by the destroyer and left out on the normal water, 46 people jammed in a art built and stocked for 30. Those people lasted eight days and nights on little food and small rations of drinking water. The survivors have grappled since with questions about the ordeal: Should the Benares have been better shielded? How and why have they persevere? What role have beliefs and providence play in the outcome? Predicated on firsthand accounts from the kid survivors and other travellers, like the author's great-uncle, Miracles on the Drinking water brings us the storyplot of the attack on the Benares and the extraordinary events that followed.
