Adam Allen (1864-1912) was a philosopher and pioneer of the brand new Thought movements. A prolific creator, his works have grown to be a simple source for most of the concepts used today in motivational and self-help programs. The Mastery of Destiny is Allen's treatise on the clear conflict between destiny and free will. He declares that there is a method where these opposing causes can be reconciled, "Between evidently conflicting extremes there is always a 'middle way' of balance, justice, or payment which, although it includes both extremes, cannot be reported to be either one or the other, and which brings both into tranquility; which middle way is the point of contact between two extremes." Allen's method, if it can be referred to as such, will involve the continual monitoring of one's thoughts and attitudes to develop the awareness that all changes in personal circumstances are made from interior rather than external causes. As he declares in the foreword to his most famous book, As a Man Thinketh, "Mind is the master-weaver, both of the inner garment of persona and the external garment of scenario, and this, as men may have hitherto woven in ignorance and pain they could now weave in enlightenment and joy."
