Prophets have always been God's covenant lawyers. Under the Old Covenant, they emerged as God's legal representatives to prosecute his circumstance against his covenant spouse, Israel. Now, in the New Covenant, they remain God's covenant lawyers, but the covenant has altered. Instead of directing out guilt, sin, and condemnation, the New Covenant lawyer's job is to point to the New Covenant and declare, "You are released from pity; you are forgiven; you are free!" The work of the New Covenant attorney (prophet) is to enforce God's New Covenant and its own effects. This includes healing, deliverance, salvation, forgiveness, and a cleansed conscience.
