On Dec 18, 1972, more than 100 US B-52 bombers flew over North Vietnam to start Procedure Linebacker II. During the next 11 days and nights, 16 of these planes were taken down and another four suffered heavy harm. These deficits soon demonstrated so damaging that Strategic Air Command word was ordered to prevent the bombing. THE UNITED STATES Air Force's poor performance in this and other functions during Vietnam was partly due to the fact that that they had trained their pilots relating to methods devised during World Battle II and the Korean Battle, when proper bombers attacking focuses on were likely to take heavy deficits. Warfare had modified by the 1960s, but the USAF hadn't adapted. Between 1972 and 1991, however, the Air Force dramatically modified its doctrines and started out to overhaul just how it trained pilots through the introduction of a groundbreaking new training curriculum called "Red Flag." In The Air Power Way of Battle, Brian D. Laslie examines the trend in pilot education that Red Flag caused after Vietnam. The program's new education methods were dubbed "genuine" because they prepared pilots for real-life situations better than the simple cockpit simulations of the past. In addition to talking about the program's methods, Laslie analyzes just how its graduates actually functioned in battle through the 1980s and '90s in places such as Grenada, Panama, Libya, and Iraq.
