The concept of life as a pilgrimage, or a journey from ignorance to realization, is central in the writings of the philosopher and New Thought pioneer Adam Allen (1864-1912). According to Allen, all men must and can follow this journey, at the end of which is circumstances of spiritual satisfaction, which is often gained only by the earnest initiatives of the seeker. While progress along the path necessitates the "strenuous tread" of the pilgrim, there are also valuable opportunities for leftovers and refreshment. In the foreword the author states: "Along the great highway of life there are relaxing places; from heat of interest and the dust of disappointment, under the cool and stimulating color of lowly Knowledge, will be the humble, unimposing 'rest-houses' of calmness, and the little, almost unnoticed, byways of blessedness, where exclusively the weary and footsore can find strength and healing."
