Goethe was probably the greatest common genius who ever before lived. Although known generally as a poet, playright, and novelist, he was also known for his work in anatomy, botany, color, fine art criticism, and jurisprudence. Many people are deterred from wanting to read anything by Goethe because of his extremely penetrating intellect and dense prose. But his travel journal, Italian Journey, is by way easier to absorb than anything else by him. The journal is a straightforward profile of his sojourn to Italy as a young man between 1786 and 1789. The reserve has today's engagement ring to it, and even Goethe appears to foreshadow the arriving of many of the items we consider "modern" today: powerful self-examination, scientific strategy, and anthropology. But that isn't why is this a great reserve. Long once you finish it, you will be contemplating the riches of pithy, insightful commentary he makes about Italians in particular and humans in general. You can revisit portions of the book often, and you'll recognise passages in it, which means you can take it down and price it to your friends. Goethe is a fabulous feast for the intellect and a balm for the nature.
