Work hasn't been as safe as it seems today. Safety in addition has never been as bureaucratized as it is today. Within the last two decades, the amount of safety rules and statutes has exploded, and organizations themselves are creating a lot more internal compliance requirements. Bureaucracy and compliance now seem to be less about controlling the basic safety of workers, and even more about controlling the responsibility of the individuals they benefit. At the same time, progress on basic safety has slowed. Many occurrence and personal injury rates have flatlined. Worse, excellent basic safety performance on low-consequence situations tends to raise the threat of fatalities and disasters. We make workers do a lot that does nothing to improve their success locally. And paradoxically, the tensing of basic safety bureaucracy robs us of exactly the source of individuals insight, imagination and resilience that can tell us how success is actually created, and where the next accident may well come from. It is time for Safe practices Anarchists: people who trust people more than process, who rely on horizontally coordinating encounters and improvements, who rebel against petty rules and coercive compliance, and who help restore the dignity and competence of individuals work.
