Growing up in the early many years of the 20th century, Joe Dooley allows his love for music and his ardent friendships with other young men to blind him to the tides of trend growing around him in British-dominated Ireland. When he realizes he can't support himself educating music in Dublin, he enlists in the Uk Army's peacetime reserves - only to be embroiled by the fantastic War convulsing European countries. Guiding his men through the chaos of the American Front, Joe comforts himself with music and memories of dear friends: daring Severin Coole, an Irish Nationalist, and fiercely dedicated Harry Vogeler, an expatriate of Germany. A sniper's bullet throws Joe in to the attention of conscientious objector Davy Rose, in whose forearms he begins to discover a kind of love he previously not presumed possible. But he learns that Severin is actively working to liberate Ireland of the British isles yoke, and during the Holiday Truce discovers Harry across the trenches in the German army. Loyalties progressively divided, Joe must choose which cause is actually his and which man will be his true partner.
