"Ben-Hur" is a historical book by Lew Wallace, a tale of your hero named Judah Ben-Hur, a Jewish nobleman who was simply falsely accused of any attempted assassination and enslaved by the Romans. Judah first encounters Jesus, who offers him a glass or two of drinking water and encouragement, as Judah is being marched to a galley to be a slave. Their lives continue to intersect as the storyline unfolds.
Judah survives his ordeal as a galley slave, after befriending and keeping the commander of his ship, who later adopts him. Judah continues on to become a trained soldier and charioteer. Judah comes back home to Jerusalem to seek revenge and redemption for his family (they perished in a Roman prison). After witnessing the Crucifixion, Judah identifies that Christ's life means an objective quite different from revenge. Judah becomes Christian, encouraged by love and the converse of keys to a kingdom greater than any on Earth.
