Italy's northernmost zone, the Veneto includes Padua, Verona, Vicenza, plus Venice itself, which once ruled the region. Some 5,000 Renaissance villas still stand, many by Palladio. A food- and wine-lover's paradise, it is also the most artistically abundant region in Italy, and the most charming, with the artwork of Giotto and Mantegna in Padua, the Roman ruins in Verona, the canals and palaces in Venice itself. Bellini, Tintoretto, Veronese, and Titian worked well here. Experience their artwork and be part with their world, with the insights of an insider. Every details is here now about the foodstuffs, the places, the best places to stay and eat. Vicenza is an essential stop on the itineraries of structures buffs and Palladio's followers, but is however bypassed by many holidaymakers visiting through the Veneto region who don't understand what it provides. This well-kept key has made remarkable cultural and inexpensive contributions to the region and merits a visit, only if for a couple of hours. Vicenza is an important Renaissance city with an extraordinary number of buildings dating back again to the 1500s, most of them related to Andrea Palladio. It was during this period that Andrea di Pietro della Gondola came to Vicenza as a 16-year-old rock mason and through the blend of his own talent and a fine network of mentors, grew to be the fantastic architect who drastically transformed Vicenza's metropolitan image. Palladio was commissioned to construct palazzi for the city's prosperous residents, redesign several buildings which have been badly destroyed by the Little league of Cambrai and make the town better reflect the affect of the Republic of Venice. His finest works in the town are the Teatro Olimpico, the Basilica Palladiana, and the Palazzo Chiericati.
