Canyon City, in Southern Idaho, is the house of Canyon State College, a little school in ownership of a sizable football coach - Ben Steinbrecher, a guy as strong as Samson and as rooted in the Bible through his minister daddy. Recognized to some as "the Leather Man", the coach does his better to raise his psychologically handicapped son in a loving home while the love in his relationship dwindles. Already retained from an NFL profession by a leg injury, Steinbrecher's frustrations accumulate while his training profession blossoms until, inevitably, he strikes the brink of human endurance. The coach's team is peopled with individuals such as Latin-quoting warfare hero Quintus LeClaire, lowered into Canyon State's basketball program due to a Vietnam flashback and a chance come across with a good cop; straight arrow David Talty, elevated by multi-colored Uncle Joe; menacing Brock Banning; and Preston "Taters" Jones. All play jobs in elevating the program and in shaping Steinbrecher's journey toward the best test of his values and his will to live on.
