Suetonius' most important surviving work is recognized as the De Vita Caesarum, a couple of twelve biographies of the successive Roman rulers.
The emperor Caligula was one of the strangest and cruelest rulers that ever lived, and almost all of what is known about his reign comes from Suetonius. The first six months of his reign appear to have been modest and successful; but after that, he fell into a spiral of sadism, erotic perversity, and ordinary insanity that made him one of the most hated tyrants ever.
His biography gathers many luxurious anecdotes, from naming his equine consul to dialling visitors to his palace in the center of the night just to play a weird game of fright with them. He was eventually assassinated, however, not before many weird omens predicted the function, regarding to Suetonius.
