Reputed to be Eliot's favorite novel, Silas Marner is defined in the first many years of the 19th century. Marner, a weaver, is an associate of a little congregation in Lantern Yard. Falsely accused of a offense he didn't commit, he leaves his home and lives a solitary life close to the community of Raveloe. He dedicates his life to weaving and hoarding yellow metal for another 15 years, but circumstances beyond his control shape his destiny. When his yellow metal is stolen, he is rescued from despair by the introduction on his unhappy hearth of a beautiful litttle lady, whom he adopts, and through whom he and the other folks of the community learn that loving relationships tend to be more fulfilling than material riches. Under the Greenwood Tree, Hardy's second novel, was printed in 1872 and became the to begin his great series of Wessex books. The book, subtitled A Rural Painting of the Dutch School, tells the endearing story of several church musicians who accompany the hymns at the neighborhood Mellstock parish choir, and we follow the fortunes of one of its participants, Dick Dewy, who comes in love with the new schoolmistress, Fancy Day.
