Two major epic poems originated from historical Greece and had the power to condition our culture for centuries. They are both related to the blind poet Homer, and are called Iliad and Odyssey.
The Odyssey is the storyline of the Greek hero Odysseus, or Ulysses, who began a journey home following the fall season of Troy. It will take him ten years of marvelous and horrendous encounters before he finally gets to his native city, where everyone assumed he was inactive. There will he find his partner Penelope, famously weaving and unweaving a never-ending tapestry while obnoxious suitors are contending for her palm. Once again, Odysseus will have to outsmart his competitors to become reunited along with his family.
The Iliad and the Odyssey are the oldest extant works of American literature. They are of tremendous cultural importance, and their magic continues to be strongly alive.
