The novelist who had written The Grapes of Wrath and the director who produced Problems and Lamps Out in Europe put together their superb abilities to tell the storyline of the coming of modern treatments to the natives of Mexico. There were several notable examples of this pen-camera method of narration, but The Overlooked Village is exclusive among them in that the written text was written before a single picture was shot. They journeyed thousands of kilometers to find just the community they needed; they borrowed children from the government school, had taken men from the areas, their wives from the market segments, an old treatments woman from her hut by the side of the trail. The motion picture they made (for release in 1941) is 8,000 toes long. From this wealth of pictures, 136 photographs were selected for his or her intrinsic beauty and then for the graceful harmony with which they accompany Steinbeck's word. This new script-photograph strategy of narration conveys its ideas with unexcelled brilliance and immediacy. Within the hands of such get better at storytellers as Steinbeck and Kline, it makes the listener capture his breath.
