Swift's allegorical satire about religion and politics employs the lives of three brothers, Martin, Peter, and Jack, each of who symbolizes a faction of the Religious faith - Anglicanism, Roman Catholicism, and the dissenting faiths, respectively. Each brother inherits a coat (representing religious practice) from other daddy (God) on the problem that they don't change it out. But instead the three quarrelsome youths disobey their daddy and change their jackets beyond identification. A Tale of the Tub was Swift's first major work and was considered an individual favorite by the writer.
