The 3rd Jeff Chaussier enigma finds Jeff time for New Orleans. This time he has matrimony on his mind. New Orleans, though, is far too seductive a lady and too twisted in secrecy for a straightforward narrative to unfold. Things appear hopeful in the beginning. Bryna no more has her brother's child to care for. Jeff is sick and tired of the life of itinerant actor and it is also unusually flush with money from a London engagement. Things are on track, even though the airfare home (his least favorite form of travelling) has left him woozy from self-medication. He wakes for an uncertain day, unclear whose foundation it is he finds himself in. Thankfully, it's Bryna who's obeying his mother's instructions on what to do with him on appearance. Memory gladly restored, Jeff lolls during intercourse as Bryna should go downstairs to get ready breakfast. Jeff needs a meal, not muffled screams and a slamming door. Dashing downstairs, he chases the intruders out the door, handicapped by his lack of clothing and irked that Bryna was used the same status. Obviously, he must ask his relatives and buddies to get her back again. Before he can, he dives into a sea of alcoholic beverages where he finds interesting new acquaintances from Indiana who wish to tour the pubs and a literary co-ed who wants to instruct him in other arts. By using his relatives and buddies plus some new acquaintances who are friends of a stockbroker and a doctor the guy can function again. His boozy excursion means that the trail has gone cold until a hurried postcard from Bryna sends him north across Lake Pontchartrain to the rolling hills of equine country and south of New Orleans to the trackless swamps. Allies turn up in both places but Jeff still needs the nice services of a quiet, but reliable Sheriff and a swamp rat with multiple names and odd connections. Bryna's rescue is ready, aside from the unlucky appearance of a monster surprise that makes the swamps impassable, or does it?
