In 1900, aged 22, Charles Stewart Rolls was the best known motorist in Britain, better known than Jeremy Clarkson today, having earned the "Thousand Mile Trial" of this year, the event that launched motoring as a useful popular theory. Rolls followed his success in the Trial by rushing in highly dangerous inter-city races in Europe. He drove the most effective time ever before achieved in Britain, although this was never ratified. At the same time, Rolls ran a sizable car-sales and service showroom in London, using 70 staff with space for 200 autos. In the period of half a year, he persuaded the secretary of the auto Society of THE UK and Ireland to become listed on him, and then, shortly after, learned Henry Royce with whom his name is currently forever linked. This triumvirate of gifted engineers and businessmen got Rolls-Royce Ltd. to the pinnacle of motor and aero anatomist that the company has occupied since. Rolls helped create the new sport of hot-air ballooning and raced his balloon for his country. He then joined a select group of intrepid pioneers who risked all to establish the theory of powered flight. He was first to take flight the English Route both ways but weeks later perished at the Bournemouth Air Show. Engineer, salesman, aristocrat, pioneer, and entrepreneur, Charles Rolls offers us a timely reminder of British technology, courage, and ingenuity more than a century ago.
