Peter Ducksworth, a Trinidadian widower of British ancestry, retires to Barbados, believing he'll find an earthly paradise there. He determines to separate his land among his three daughters while he's alive, his motive not unlike that of King Lear, who hoped "That future strife/May be averted now". But Lear made the fatal mistake of confusing flattery with love, and so does Ducksworth. Feeling snubbed by his youngest child, Ducksworth determines that only after he dies will she receive her portion of the land. For the time being, he gives his two more aged daughters their helpings, ironically arranging in motion the strife he hoped to avoid. Amazingly written in graceful prose, this is a book about greed, resentment, jealousy, betrayal, and charming love, by which Nunez weaves styles of racism and classism in the postcolonial world of the Caribbean, supplying us a diverse ensemble of people of African, Indian, Chinese, Syrian/Lebanese, and British ancestry.
