The varieties of households we see today are different than they were even a decade before, some fantastically so, as paths to parenthood have been rejiggered by technology, activism, and laws. In Modern Families, Joshua Gamson brings us outstanding family creation stories - his own included - that light up this changing world of modern day kinship. We meet a child with two moms, made out of one mother's egg and the sperm of a guy none of them has ever achieved and carried by the other mom; another delivered to a guy and a woman in Ethiopia, shipped by his natural grandmother to an orphanage after both his parents passed on in close succession, and then to the forearms of his mom, who is nurturing him solo. We hear the storyplot of a woman with two fathers, conceived with one father's sperm and eggs donated by a friend and carried to term in the womb of another close friend who becomes their surrogate; and of two ladies, one delivered in Nepal and the other in India, officially adopted by a woman who is co-parenting them with her partner and a homosexual male couple. These are not your grandparents' creation reviews. These stories are deeply personal but also unavoidably politics. Combining personal memoir and ethnographic storytelling, Modern Families tells a variety of unconventional family-creation stories - adoption and aided reproduction, homosexual and direct parents, coupled and single, and multi-parent households - set from the interpersonal, legal, and economical contexts in which they were made. In these reviews, family creation was painstaking and sometimes difficult. Often, parts of biological reproduction took place in a new body than that of the parents nurturing the child; sometimes, the model of kinship was made up practically from scratch, often in tension with officially and socially sanctioned variants of family. Becoming parents included jumping remarkable hurdles - interpersonal conventions, legal and medical organizations - with heightened objective and inventiveness, within and across multiple inequities and privileges. From the bumpy and potholed panorama, as institutional change lags behind the creativeness of living, as breaches of family norms continue to be controversial, so that as inequalities haunt the most intensely adoring acts. Yet each of these families, however they had become, shares the same common joys that all families talk about. Mapping the large, complex ground of the present day kinship, Modern Families presents a personal, intimate consideration of social differ from the inside away.
