In this particular beautifully nuanced dark comedy, a 9/11 widow and her child, Hamlet, have retreated from Brooklyn to the idyllic rural countryside upstate, where for almost eight years they may have run a sustainable farm. Alas, their outrageously obese neighbours, who choose the starchy products of industrial agriculture, reject their elitist ways (recycling, eating healthy, reading). Hamlet, who is now 18, is starting to think that something is rotten in the United States of America, where health, pleasure, and independence are exchanged for cheap Walmart goods, Paxil, countless conflict, standard curriculum, and environmental degradation. He becomes very despondent when, on the very day of the 8th anniversary of his father's fatality, his mother marries a horrid, boring bureaucrat known as Claudius. Things get even more depressing for Hamlet when he discovers from Horatio, a conspiracy theorist, that Claudius is a scams. The deceptions, spying, and corruption will eventually lead, such as Shakespeare's play, to tragedy.
