Twenty-two years following the close of the American Civil Warfare, General William T. Sherman distributed his thoughts and insights on the "grand strategy" of the war. He had written: "We veterans believe in 1861-5 we fought a holy war, with absolute directly on our side, with genuine patriotism, with acceptable skill, and that people achieved an outcome which enabled the United States of America to job application her glorious job in the interest of most mankind, after an interruption of four years by as needless a war as ever before afflicted a people.
