An astonishing, even shocking debut - darker when compared to a bad night in hell - that is written with both humor and heart by "a article writer with considerable and scary products and consummate skill". Occur a bitterly benighted, mine-polluted corner of Virginia, Nitro Pile follows a group of people destined together by alcohol, small-time offense, and music. There's Leon, a hapless bass player that can embroil himself in big trouble just by getting up each day. And his would-be partner, Jennifer, who's coping with Arnett, the town's most dangerous thug - and hoping Leon will help poison him. And there's Arnett himself, a psychopath for the age range - albeit so enchanting and deranged, so strikingly traditional, that he arrests the listener's attention and keeps it fast. His mirror image, a singer-songwriter known as Jones, has his own moral issues, though at least he's trying to be a good man. The smart if battered heart and soul who pulls us through this storyline is Jennifer, struggling heroically to endure the endemic hopelessness and assault that have encircled her since labor and birth. Relentless? Yes. But little or nothing remotely gratuitous: only the pain and misery that inspire so a lot of the music these folks love more than life itself.
