Handsome Jack port is a logger, nomad, and blessed dreamer. His young better half, Simone, has way too many kids and never enough money to support or protect them. The family continues on the road, shedding a grand total of 27 homes. Their first child, Randy, is sensitive and amazing and vivid, protector of his younger siblings, the fearless star of their childhood ventures and misadventures - until something snaps inside him. The next child who comes each year after him - our narrator, Barbara - is the lucky one who can imagine getting out. Each time the family relocates, she seems "the expectation in departing and doing better next time". Poverty, mental illness, sexual mistreatment, and injustice pursue them wherever they go. They live small-town life hard and suffer from, the majority of all Randy. The great surprise of The Wish in Leaving isn't that these characters descend ever more into isolation and strife but that despite this they remain a family, that there is always the spark of wit in their banter and a kind of closeness whatever happens, a good sense of normalcy. Slowly but surely the listener comes to understand why The Wish in Going out of is a booklet that had to be written. In it, Williams shows beyond doubt that there is a very important factor that may survive the worst of life and even death itself: love without wisdom.
