Tiona picks up six years following the end of Vaz. Tiona, Vaz's little girl, is starting grad school in physics, has a "bad youngster" musician boyfriend, and does indeed her own strange variety of charity work at a homeless shelter. Her teacher has her start work on a project to try to achieve high-temperature superconduction by doping the graphene membranes her lab partner has determined how to precipitate. Oddly, her experiments are plagued by bizarre moves in the membranes when she is applicable current to them. When she mentions the moves to Vaz, he soon decides that her "problem" presents a physics discovery that could cause the production of any reactionless drive with the capacity of lifting a build into space.
