It's 1836, and 19-year-old Fanny Appleton, a privileged little princess of a wealthy, upper-class Boston industrialist, is touring Europe with her family. Like many women of her day, she enjoys the fine clothes, food, and company of the top notch interpersonal circles. But unlike her peers, Fanny is also drawn to education, literature, and even more intellectual pursuits. Published publisher and poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is also touring Europe but under much different circumstances. Just lately widowed, he is gathering research for a fresh publication that he expects will secure his professorship at Harvard College. Befriended by the Appleton family while going to Switzerland, Henry is unveiled to Fanny and perceives in her a kindred spirit, a fan of words and literature and high ideals. He is in love. Fanny, however, is uncertain. He is from a lower social class and is older than she actually is. How could such a romance ever prosper? Could a publication of Henry's poetry, in person shipped, persuade Fanny to trust in a love that will last forever and permanently?
