Montague Rhodes Adam (1862-1936), who composed as M. R. Adam, was an British author, middle ages scholar and provost of King's University, Cambridge, and of Eton University. He is best known for his remarkable ghost stories. Adam reinvented the ghost history for the modern audience by leaving Gothic elements and using reasonable contemporary options. His protagonists and plots often reflected his own antiquarian pursuits. Accordingly he's known as the originator of the 'antiquarian ghost history'. 'Wailing Well' is the storyplot of several son scouts camping anywhere on the downs in the south of England who are warned not to go into a specific field which has an individual clump of trees. A local shepherd relates a strange story about the area, which he identifies as Wailing Well. He remarks to have seen four skeletal characters walking through the field, three women and one man, all walking on the clump of trees where the well is. One of the young scouts determines to investigate for himself....
