Serial killer Frank Haid, dubbed the Painkiller by Chicago police force and multimedia, murders 18 people - all paralytics. Commanded by an unseen presence that he telephone calls ''Father'' which speaks in the words of an uncle whose rotting corpse he maintains in the living room, Haid damages his patients (what's left of them) and facts in a manner that puzzles police force. Hardest strike are residents of Marclinn, a home for the handicapped, where survivors make a decision they must track down the madman themselves. Their work bring them into connection with Chicago's weird underworld - including junkie/murderers and a deformed prostitute whose head grows out her chest - and their own true selves. Crippled physically and emotionally, Marclinn inhabitants must triumph over their restrictions before taking on their nemesis. Their unlikely leading man is Evan Shustak, who's the novel's centerpiece. Further into the novel, he dons his superhero attire - wrist braces, a "utility belt" from which hang luggage of supplements and aspirin, and a plaid heat pad for a cape then announces: "Crippled and crazy, I am the American Dream!"
