In Merridale, semi-transparent blue apparitions have appeared. These aren't ghosts, exactly. They are simply visions of the lifeless in their final occasions - the previous seconds of these lives portrayed for any to see. They don't really move, and they don't speak. Ash Wednesday is a thoughtful horror report about what happens to people when they are pressured to gaze into the face of loss of life and, specifically, the facial skin of their own personal dead: their friends and family, those they believed to be dead and removed. Murders are unveiled, rapes, and other crimes. People despair, and try to create new lives out of the wreckage. Two of the are Bradley Meyers, a vet already powered half-crazy by his experiences in Vietnam, faced with the vision of his lifeless son, and today barely capable of containing his rage, and Jim Callender, whose child has perished in the same crash, for which he's partly in charge. As Callender sinks into guilt, Meyers goes toward murder. This edition of Ash Wednesday contains your final portion that had not been incorporated with the booklet when it was initially published.
