The goal of this research is to look at the ways that mentoring affects black graduate students' conclusion of programs of review. Performance is assessed by conclusion of their graduate program, length of time taken up to complete the program, grade point average, and overall frame of mind about their graduate college experience. On average, over half of all black graduate students leave their programs of review before completion compared to twenty five percent attrition (non-completion of program of review) of white students. A review of the literature shows that any form of mentoring boosts conclusion rates among black graduate students. Existing research further shows that when combined with like mentors, such as same contest or gender, black graduate students complete their programs at even higher rates. The prevailing research is, however, limited because of the age of the study and factors such as attrition by self-control. Updated research is required to determine why, despite being admitted to graduate programs of review at the highest rates in USA history, black students are giving without graduate degrees more than every other contest. Vincent Tinto's theory of social adjustment claims that students who are not socially adjusted are less likely to persist (complete their program of review). Because black students are participating in predominantly white institutions at the highest rates since Reconstruction, this research will verify ways that black graduate students become socially adjusted and exactly how it impacts their persistence. The expected results of the study are that black graduate students who experienced mentors completed their programs more often than those who did not have mentors. On top of that, those who experienced mentors of the same contest, gender, or socio-economic backgrounds may survey even higher percentages of conclusion. On the other hand, those who did not have mentors may survey lower percentages of conclusion.
