In his 1997 work Theology of Discontent, American Iranian Hamid Dabashi shows that the Iranian Trend of 1978-1979 wouldn't normally have happened experienced it not been for the important ideas of eight Iranian Islamic thinkers in the four ages before it occurred. Dabashi studies these thinkers' efforts to the introduction of Iran's system of Islamic values. He says this ideology was shaped both regarding to Iranians' understanding of themselves and regarding to their understanding of the Western world. A fierce desire to withstand control and reject any possible imposition of European imperialism led to the country's cutting edge nature against a West-friendly monarchy. Among Dabashi's arguments - that thinkers who may often oppose each other's views will still come together to ensure their mutual survival - has turned out useful outside the context of the Iranian Trend. It offers provided a way of understanding Muslim-Western relations that have apparently stalled in the post-9/11 world. This has given Theology of Discontent a certain timelessness and has validated it as an important work.
