In the planting season of 1974, as the last American soldiers were being pulled out of Vietnam, Ron Kovic and a tiny group of other severely hurt veterans in a California VA hospital launched the North american Veterans Movement. In the extraordinary feat of political organizing, Kovic corralled his fellow AVM people into staging a sit-in, and a hunger hit, in the LA office of Senator Alan Cranston, demanding better treatment of hurt and impaired veterans. This is a short-lived and chaotic but in the end successful motion to increase the deplorable conditions in VA clinics across the country. Hurricane Block is their account - one which resonates deeply today - informed by Kovic in the keen and brutally honest style that led to over one million sales of Delivered on the Fourth of July.
